How Much Are You in Your Head When it Comes to Intuitive Eating?
In my last post, I spoke about my pants getting a bit tighter and the idea of going on a diet.
I am happy to say I did not go on a diet. However, some thoughts and feelings were brought up around my body.
Negative body talk can be so daunting. Often, we don’t even realize how much we are in our heads, creating negative thoughts about our bodies. What if, and this may be true for some, half of your waking hours are spent having negative thoughts about your body? That’s a lot of body bashing!
I often ask clients to reframe some of their negative thoughts. Many times they reply, “I can’t; almost all my thoughts are negative.”
Like anything that feels unsurmountable, take one step at a time. Maybe the first step is that from 8-9 am, you reframe each negative thought into something positive. Then go from there. We weren’t born thinking negative thoughts, so we can unlearn them as much as we learned them.
I’m not saying it will be easy. It will take work and may be a slow process. Because of this, in the beginning, reframing negative body thoughts may not seem to have an impact and feel daunting.
How often have you been completely unaware of your thoughts or behaviors until long after the fact? You are not alone! The majority of the population spends close to 47% of their waking hours with their mind wandering, disconnected from the present moment.
In order to accomplish meaningful change, we must be aware.
This usually means you will need to pay attention to thoughts or actions that you don’t like or would rather not experience. Becoming aware of destructive or unpleasant thoughts in the moment is a step towards positive change. Trust me. It’s easier to look at your thoughts and behaviors through the lens of understanding kindness. By doing this, you will be practicing self-compassion.
