Barriers and Detours on Your Fitness Journey
It’s so easy to skip a workout or movement.
One of the frustrations I hear from clients is, “I know I need to exercise. I just can’t seem to commit. I am so busy I just don't know where I can squeeze it in.”
It’s so easy to skip a workout or movement. Next time, try using the reason why you exercise or want to get started as a quick reminder for decision-making. It may be, “I feel good after. I have more energy. My stress level will go way down. I will experience less (or more manageable) anxiety.” If you are still struggling with starting a routine, plan something small and attainable.
Start by figuring out your Why, When and What.
We often think, “I don’t have time for a 45-minute walk/run, so I might as well not do anything.” Yet, going on a 5-10 minute walk, bike ride, or run will actually improve your mood. When we relate our mood change to something we did, we eventually want to do that thing more often.
Below are a few suggestions:
Rollerblading
Batting practice
Walking while listening to a podcast or with a dog
Swimming to get away from noise while concentrating on your breath
Hiking
Running
Getting the backyard ready for spring
Playing tennis
Playing pickleball
Taking the stairs instead of the elevator
Bowling
Starting anywhere is a start. Try and get out of your comfort zone. You will never know what you really like until you try it yourself.
