Clients often tell me they have sugar cravings they can’t control.

The first thing I ask is how often they are eating. Ninety-nine percent of the time, once they start eating every 3-4 hours, their sugar cravings disappear.

Of course, we still want something sweet from time to time. However, it will be more about enjoying the sweet than giving our bodies instant energy.

Today, I was on the phone doing a weekly check-in with a client. She told me she was on her way to Starbucks to get a coffee because she was so tired and needed energy for the rest of the day. I suggested she also get a protein snack from them. She stated this would not have dawned on her.

This client called me back about 90 minutes later to tell me she felt so much better after eating (and, of course, having her coffee).

Usually, when we are tired, we really need food and/or water. The more we stay nourished, the less we need coffee and sugary foods.

So how do we stay nourished and what do we eat?

A key part of health and nutrition is keeping your blood sugar balanced. To do this, eat every 3-4 hours and have a protein source at meals and snacks.

Try using the following guide to create a plate that will help keep your blood sugar balanced and support optimal health.

Plates and snacks can be built the same way: carbohydrates (starchy and non-starchy), protein, and a healthy fat. When having foods that are higher in carbohydrates, do not eat them alone. Try to pair them with a protein.

First, pick a protein. Next, pick a starchy vegetable, grain, or fruit. Next, pick your non-starchy vegetables. You may choose to have half your plate with starchy vegetables or half your plate non-starchy vegetables, while 1/4 is protein and 1/4 starch or vegetable. Others will choose to have their plate in thirds: a third non-starchy vegetable, a third starchy vegetable, and a third protein.

In my next post, I will provide suggestions on how to create balanced meals and snacks.

But remember to listen to your body for what it intuitively needs. Stay nourished throughout the day by eating every 3-4 hours.
